Chapter Eleven

“Sicily?” I asked as I frowned at her.

She backed herself into a corner with her shoulders hunched up to her earlobes and her hands locked together like she was getting ready to pray. The way her eyes rolled around the room reminded me of the time she woke up straight out of a nightmare in the middle of the living room when she was just eight years old.

I was across the room in half a second and tugging my daughter into my arms as I rubbed her back. “Sicily, what’s going on? You all right?” I whispered into her ear as I worried about whatever in heck was going on in that complex head of hers.

Alton trotted up next to me and put an arm around her as he gave me a real concerned look before facing his daughter. “Hey, bug, you can tell us.”

Her mouth opened and closed. She blinked a few times, then she looked at Alton like she just realized he was standing there.

“I... I need to find a book,” she blurted. Then she shook me off and walked briskly to the front door of the trailer, no doubt to head back to our own trailer to retrieve whatever book she was going on about. When she reached the doorknob, she turned back to face me. “I just have to be sure of something.”

We all watched her disappear, that awful quiet taking hold again. I hated that silence. It felt too much like the end was approaching.

Sicily came back about five minutes later looking like she’d seen several ghosts while retrieving that plastic-wrapped book. The book was one of the special orders we’d gotten from the library in Branson and now Sicily held it up, her knuckles turning white as she brandished a chapter in the very center of the book, her jaw so tight that the muscles were starting to twitch around her temples.

I touched her shoulder. “Easy, sweet pea.”

“Sorry. I just—” She inhaled sharply. “I wasn’t sure I was right and I’m really hoping I’m not right.” Her gaze softened as she looked at Alton. “I don’t want to be right.”

“It’s okay, sweetie,” Alton said gently. “You can tell me.” He wrapped an arm around Sicily’s shoulders as he looked at me and smiled real sweet like. “You can tell us.”

Sicily seemed to get even paler. She kept looking between Alton and me like the two of us were merging into some weird kind of creature. A quick step to the right put me at a comfortable distance from Alton, who looked like he wanted to put his other arm around me (and that was decidedly NOT happening). Bubba helped by butting right between our legs and then dropping down on the ground to take a quick nap. Thank the good Lord my dog knew my needs without me having to say them.

I turned back to Sicily. “All right, don’t sugarcoat it. Give us whatever you’ve got.”

She drummed the hardcover of the book tentatively while her eyes skittered across a page, but then she turned it and did the same to the next one.
